This role will be based at Kilve Court, Kilve Bridgwater, TA5 1EA and Charterhouse Outdoor Education Centre, Blagdon, BS40 7XR.
Role summary
As a Maintenance Officer you will be responsible for day-to-day maintenance, security and operational support across Somerset Council’s Outdoor Education Centres at Kilve Court and Charterhouse, ensuring safe, compliant and well-maintained facilities for customers and staff.
You’ll carry out planned and reactive maintenance, coordinate repairs and contractors, monitor site systems (including heating, energy and plant), and manage site security and opening/closing procedures. Working closely with Centre Managers and Property Services, you’ll also support health and safety compliance and oversee maintenance budgets to keep the centres running smoothly.
What you’ll do - key responsibilities
Set within two unique outdoor education centres, this varied and hands-on role is key to maintaining safe, welcoming and well-presented estate environments. Working across Kilve Court and Charterhouse, you’ll take pride in keeping buildings, grounds and facilities running smoothly, supporting memorable outdoor experiences for all who visit.
- Carry out a wide range of hands-on maintenance and building tasks across Kilve Court and Charterhouse, including repairs, basic construction, grounds work and general upkeep
- Coordinate larger repairs with the central Property team and external contractors when required
- Open and secure buildings daily, acting as key holder and ensuring sites are safe, secure and ready for use
- Maintain a clean, tidy and welcoming environment for staff and visitors
- Monitor and maintain site systems including heating, alarms, CCTV and equipment
- Carry out routine checks on buildings, drains and gutters, resolving issues proactively
- Support energy efficiency across sites, including lighting and sustainability measures
- Work closely with Centre Managers to plan, prioritise and schedule maintenance
- Manage budgets, raise purchase orders and track maintenance spend
- Lead on site health and safety, including staff inductions, compliance checks and system updates
- Respond to urgent repairs and emergencies, liaising with relevant teams
- Provide occasional minibus driving support for centre visitors
- Promote equality, safety and wellbeing, creating a positive environment for all
What we’re looking for – knowledge, experience & skills
Essential:
- Working knowledge of basic building, repair and grounds maintenance
- Understanding of health and safety requirements in a site or facilities environment
- Knowledge of site security procedures, including key holding and alarm systems
- Awareness of environmental sustainability and energy conservation practices
- Experience carrying out a range of day-to-day building repairs and maintenance
- Experience managing/reacting to maintenance issues and prioritising workload
- Experience working with contractors or service providers
- Experience maintaining safe working environments in line with health and safety procedures
- Relevant vocational qualification or training in a building or maintenance-related field (or equivalent experience)
- Full UK driving licence
- Practical maintenance skills across a range of building, repair and grounds tasks
- Ability to identify, prioritise and resolve maintenance issues
- Good organisational skills and ability to manage competing demands
- Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, contractors and customers
Desirable:
- Knowledge of maintenance requirements in listed or heritage buildings
- Understanding of planned preventative maintenance and contractor management
- Awareness of council systems (e.g. finance systems or CIVCA, or similar)
- Knowledge of statutory compliance requirements linked to building maintenance
- Experience working in a facilities, estates or outdoor education environment
- Experience monitoring budgets, raising purchase orders or processing invoices
- Experience undertaking routine inspections of buildings, plant or equipment
- Experience delivering basic health and safety inductions or toolbox talks
- NVQ Level 2/3 (or equivalent) in a building, maintenance or facilities-related discipline
- Health and Safety qualification (e.g. IOSH or equivalent)
- First Aid or Fire Warden training
- Minibus driving qualification (or willingness to obtain)
- Ability to use basic IT systems for reporting, finance processing and data entry
- Strong problem-solving skills for urgent or unexpected maintenance issues
- Ability to work independently as a key holder and manage site responsibilities
- Ability to support and promote a safe, inclusive and customer-focused environment
Additional Information
- Permanent. 37 hours a week.
- 25 day’s annual leave (additional to bank holidays)
