Role summary:
You’ll be playing a crucial role in supporting the effective, safe and compliant management of traffic across Somerset’s highway network. You’ll be providing technical assistance in the production of Traffic Regulation Orders for any activities that impact traffic flow or introduce restrictions. This will include planned and emergency works, community events, highway development schemes and more. You will provide high-quality written work, maintain training materials, manage and analyse data, and liaise with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. The result of your work will be the maintaining of a safe, efficient and well-managed highway network for all users.
What you’ll do - key responsibilities:
- Provide administrative and coordination support to senior colleagues and teams.
- Process all related documentation for Traffic Regulation Orders, traffic management schemes, and event management.
- Ensure statutory requirements of the Council as the highway authority are met, under supervision.
- Aid in establishing and prioritising workloads, and monitoring progress against agreed deadlines with colleagues and service provider staff.
- Ensure records and data are accurately maintained and kept up to date.
What we’re looking for – knowledge, experience & skills:
Essential
- Understanding of traffic management principles and practices.
- Knowledge of Traffic Regulation Orders and road closure processes.
- Familiarity with highway authority statutory requirements.
- Awareness of health and safety regulations related to traffic management.
- Experience in a technical support role within traffic management or a related field.
- Experience in preparing presentation materials and technical reports.
- Experience in liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
- Relevant technical qualification in traffic management or a related field.
- Certification in health and safety practices.
- Strong technical and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to prepare detailed presentation materials.
- Proficiency in data management and analysis software.
- Ability to work effectively under supervision and as part of a team.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
Desirable
- Knowledge of data management and analysis techniques.
- Understanding of public consultation and engagement processes.
- Experience in managing and analysing data.
- Experience in emergency traffic management situations.
- Experience in project participation and service improvement initiatives.
- Qualification in data management or analysis.

Additional Information:
- This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week.
- Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to meet project deadlines or attend community events.
- 25 days’ annual leave (in addition to bank holidays).
