Join us on our mission to give every child the best possible start in life in Somerset.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference to the health, wellbeing and development of children and families across Somerset. Working as part of our Public Health Nursing Service, you will contribute to the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme from the antenatal period to five years.

Working within a supportive team, you will assess identified needs and deliver, review and record agreed episodes of care within your professional competence, with allocation and clinical oversight from a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor).

About the Role

As a Community Staff Nurse in Public Health Nursing, you'll work alongside Health Visitors and partner organisations to deliver health promotion, early intervention and targeted support for children and families.

You'll work across family homes, clinics, Best Start Family Hubs and community settings, supporting families with a range of health and wellbeing needs while managing your own workload and contributing to high-quality care.

You'll play an important role in identifying emerging needs, developmental concerns and safeguarding issues, helping to ensure children and families receive the right support at the right time.

If you're a registered nurse or midwife with a passion for supporting children and families, promoting positive outcomes and reducing health inequalities, we'd love to hear from you.

How You’ll Make a Difference

  • Support children and families by delivering key elements of the Healthy Child Programme and helping them achieve positive health and wellbeing outcomes.
  • Carry out assessments, identify needs and provide advice and support tailored to each family's circumstances.
  • Help parents and carers with a range of topics including infant feeding, child development, healthy lifestyles, emotional wellbeing and keeping children safe and healthy.
  • Identify concerns relating to a child's development, wellbeing or safety and work with colleagues to ensure families receive the right support.
  • Build positive relationships with children and families, providing compassionate and inclusive care in a variety of settings.
  • Work closely with Health Visitors and partner organisations, including health professionals, schools, early years providers and community services.
  • Maintain accurate records and share information appropriately to support the best outcomes for children and families.
  • Manage your workload effectively while contributing to team activities, service improvements and high-quality care.

What You’ll Bring

  • Current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife.
  • At least 12 months' post-registration experience and confidence in assessing needs, planning support and delivering high-quality care.
  • Experience of working with children and families, providing advice, guidance and support to meet a range of needs.
  • An understanding of public health nursing, child development, health promotion and early intervention.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding responsibilities and the ability to recognise and respond appropriately to concerns about a child's wellbeing or safety.
  • Strong communication, organisation and digital skills, including record keeping and report writing.
  • The ability to work independently, use your judgement and seek support when needed.
  • A collaborative approach and experience of working effectively with colleagues and partner organisations.
  • A compassionate and inclusive approach, with a commitment to improving outcomes for children and families.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes, or the ability to meet the travel requirements of the role through alternative means.
